Thunder Cares and OGE Reopen Basketball Court at Briarwood

Moore Public Schools and Briarwood students and staff gathered on the big blue basketball court on Sept. 13 with members of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Rumble, and Moore Chamber of Commerce representatives to celebrate its ribbon cutting and reopening.

After welcomes and remarks by Dr. Robert Romines and Thunder Cares representatives, students played games, engaged in skills activity rotations with Thunder support team members, and were wowed by the Thunder Drummers and an on-site DJ. The OG&E Thunder Bolt activity trailer was also available for students to explore. Principal Amanda Sumner may have stolen the show with her dance moves, though!

On behalf of the Moore Public Schools district, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the Thunder and the Thunder Cares Foundation for their incredible generosity and partnership with us since 2013. Those projects were investments in the emotional rebuilding of our community, and for that, we cannot thank you enough.

-  Dr. Robert Romines, MPS Superintendent

The Thunder Cares organization has a three-pillar focus on:

  • Education
  • Health and wellness
  • Community

The Thunder Cares Foundation, in collaboration with OG&E noted on their Facebook page that, "All three courts were originally dedicated after the devastating 2013 tornado, and now have newly renovated paint, graphics, and basketball goals."

Plaza Towers Elementary and Highland East Junior High also shared in the celebrations last week as their resurfaced blue tops are revealed.

Briarwood even got a shoutout on NBA.com!
