What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer software program that helps teachers manage and monitor students' reading. A student simply picks a book at his or her level and reads it at his or her own pace. When finished, the student takes a short quiz on the computer. Accelerated Reader gives both students and teachers feedback based on the quiz results that the teacher then uses to direct ongoing reading practice.
Students using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience.
Each student is initially given a computer generated test/screening, called the STAR Test, to determine his/her AR reading level. Classroom teachers then inform students individually of the reading level he/she should be looking for in the Briarwood Elementary School Media Center. Students learn how to find these books through a color coded dot system used in the Media Center which allows the students to see the Reading Level of the book and the maximum number of points that can be earned from that book. Total points earned per book is determined by their score on the test.
Children enjoy taking the quizzes after they have completed their books - in many cases, they can't wait! Best of all, they learn and grow at their own pace.
Every parent has concerns whenever his or her child tries something new. Your questions deserve straightforward answers.
What if my child doesn't like reading?
Finding books that are at the right level for your child is the key. Your child should do well on the AR quiz if the books chosen are at his/her reading level. Success on the quiz will encourage your child to read more. With guidance from the teacher, and success with each test, using books they have chosen, children will no doubt develop a love of reading.
Will my child have to read a book that I don't want him/her to read?
No. There are many, many choices of books at your child's level. He/She will never be forced to read a book you find questionable.
My child already does well in school. Why does he/she need this?
Even if a child is gifted at playing a musical instrument, he/she has to practice to develop his/her talent. Bright children, like all children, need to be challenged. Teachers can monitor comprehension ability as well as reading and vocabulary growth through the AR program.
What can I do to help?
You can do what you've always done - encourage your child! You can help by making sure your child has time to read at home—20 minutes a day, minimum. Build a lifelong love of reading and learning.
Make reading a family affair. Read TO your child, or WITH your child. When ready your child will read INDEPENDENTLY.
ALWAYS, always talk to your child about his/her reading selections and show interest in their choice of books. Allow them to ask questions and share the story. Ask them questions to help them understand and develop a better comprehension of what they have read. REMEMBER: NO CHILD IS EVER TOO OLD FOR YOU TO SHOW AN INTEREST IN THEIR READING CHOICES!
I'm concerned that my child will be unfairly compared to others.
Then you'll really like Accelerated Reader. This program helps the teacher work with each child individually. Students are encouraged to progress at their own pace on their own levels.
How do we know which quizzes students have access to?
Briarwood Elementary, as well as all schools in the Moore School District, is a member of Accelerated Reader Enterprise, which means our students have access to every Accelerated Reader Quiz that is published. Even if the book is not in the library, students will still have access to the quiz. Use the AR Quiz List at the left of the page to search for AR books with quizzes. If you would like to search the library for books please do so from the Briarwood's Library Search page.
